Grief Support Groups From Crossroads
Grief is normal and natural, but many of the ideas we have been taught about dealing with grief are not helpful. One common misconception is experiencing five stages of grief. While some emotions are common, they don’t come in stages. Mourners will experience a wide and unique range of feelings, mental reactions, physical effects, spiritual struggles and behavioral or social difficulties throughout the course of their grief journey. Because of the many different experiences and changes that can occur, bereavement support, usually through the help of a grief support group, can be incredibly helpful to mourners.
Other incorrect ideas about dealing with loss can be summed up in these six myths:
Six common myths about grief:
- Time Heals All Wounds
- Don’t Feel Bad
- Grieve Alone
- Replace The Loss
- Be Strong
- Keep Busy
Grief/bereavement support and recovery after a loss comes from understanding and accepting everything left unsaid in a relationship. We are all advised to “let go” and “move on.” Most of us would do that if we knew how. Completion of pain caused by loss is what allows us to “let go” and “move on.” It is almost impossible to “move on” without first taking a series of actions that lead to completion.
Moving beyond loss.
The Grief Recovery Method® program teaches the correct action choices to help people “move beyond” the pain caused by loss. It is a seven-to-twelve week bereavement support group program that creates a safe environment in which to look at old beliefs about dealing with loss; to look at what other losses have affected your life; and to take new actions that lead to completion. The program is geared towards providing family grief support for those who have recently lost a loved one.
The program was created by Grief Recovery® Institute founders, John W. James and Russell Friedman. It is led by an individual who has been trained and certified by the Grief Recovery Institute. To ensure your success within this program, your facilitator has direct access to the founders of the Institute.
The Grief Recovery Method program builds on each previous bereavement support session, therefore attendance and commitment are essential. There is no fee to participate in the grief recovery group program. A complimentary copy of The Grief Recovery Handbook: The Action Program for Moving Beyond Death, Divorce, and Other Losses (released by Harper Collins in 1998) is provided to all participants.
