Donate Blood and Help with Summer Shortages
Summer vacations can make it a difficult season for blood drives, creating a critical blood shortage for those who need surgery and other life-saving treatment.
“Hospital patients don’t have the luxury of taking summer vacations like the rest of us,” said Patsy Shipley Vice President, Donor and Hospital Services at Community Blood Center in Kansas City, MO. “We have to ask our communities to roll up their sleeves to make sure we can provide lifesaving blood to every hospital patient who needs it.”
“Based on our current projections, our need for donors is critical,” Shipley added. “We certainly don’t want to come up short when our hospital partners and their patients need us.” Shipley emphasized, "An adequate blood supply is essential to the health of any community. Therefore, we are asking all eligible donors to help replenish the blood supply by taking just an hour from their day to make that life-saving donation.”
According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood, and one pint of blood can save up to three lives.
Crossroads Hospice is sponsoring a blood drive to help cope with the shortage on Monday, June 30th from 1-4pm at our Kansas City office. Click here to sign up for a time slot to join us.
There are also blood drives happening daily nationwide. Contact your local community blood center or click here to find a Red Cross blood drive near you.
