bereavement superheroes

When an individual suffers a loss and doesn't know where to turn, bereavement coordinators are the quiet superheroes providing comfort, education and support.

Bereavement coordinators, also known as bereavement counselors, assist families in a time of great sorrow. They are the listeners; the ones who can help a grieving person understand and cope with their loss.

Hope for the Hopeless

"Our bereavement coordinators show incredible perseverance," says Sherri Bickley, head of Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care Support Services.

"They spend all day, everyday, being with others in their darkest moments of pain and loss. They give excellent, compassionate care and keep looking for even more to do for the next person they help.”

Sherri acknowledges that the role can be taxing on the coordinators, saying, “They may get tired, but they never stop. They are true heroes that stay when with someone in their grief long after most others have moved on."

As Vickie Mears, Director of Grief Support Services at Crossroads, tells us: “Bereavement counseling is the ability to express — and lend — hope to those who are feeling hopeless.”

In addition to personal support, they also address complicated grief and dispel myths about grief recovery.
