Miss Phyllis Delights the Office Every Tuesday

Her Gift of Time is Precious

Miss Phyllis’ gift of time is like clockwork. You can expect her at the Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care office in Dayton every Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 to 4:30 pm. 

That’s when she arrives to volunteer in the office with a pep in her step and a big smile on her face. Phyllis Davis has been volunteering for Crossroads for more than 10 years.

Phyllis first became acquainted with Crossroads through her granddaughter, who was an employee at the time and had arranged for a Crossroads representative to speak about the benefits of hospice care and volunteer opportunities at Phyllis’ “Circle” at her church.

The Circle is a group of community-minded congregants looking to make an impact through volunteering and service projects. Phyllis took the bait and applied to volunteer at Crossroads. She hasn’t looked back since.

Now every Tuesday she is on site in the office assisting with everyday office activities. Making copies, filing and mailings are all in Phyllis’ wheelhouse. 

So is making beautiful cut-out butterflies that are put on ribbons and hung on the wall in the conference room by the Bereavement Department, memorializing patients who have recently passed. 

Phyllis also helps the Chaplains by keeping their notebooks up to date with new patients and if needed, she puts together supply bags for the clinical care teams to take on their patient care visits.

Volunteering is something Phyllis has enjoyed for most of her adult life even though she also worked in offices and as a property rental agent. It was the way she made friends in a military family that found her living in many different places over the years. 

Volunteering at her daughter’s schools was how she met other mothers and families in the community, she said. “You meet so many nice people” as a volunteer, Phyllis said. Nice is how the end-of-life care professionals at Crossroads in Dayton describe Miss Phyllis on any day of the week.
